New Additions to the POD Network /
National Teaching & Learning FORUM
Online Library

The POD Network and The National Teaching & Learning FORUM have been compiling an online library of resources on teaching, learning and faculty development for some time. A recent call for new material, links to valuable, existing resources created by POD members has yielded a harvest of excellent material.

University of Michigan

The University of Michigan, long a leader in scholarship on teaching and learning and site of one of the most active teaching and learning programs (http://www.crlt.umich.edu/index.php)does not offer a periodic newsletter. Instead, the center issues "Occasional Papers" on various teaching and learning topics.

These can be found at http://www.crlt.umich.edu/publinks/occasional.php.

Indiana University

Another Big Ten University with a strong reputation for research and leadership in college teaching and learning, Indiana University offers a wide variety of valuable materials, many of them as downloadable PDF references.

            BULLET IMAGE Discussion FAQ FINAL.pdf
BULLET IMAGE Dictionary 2008 - Discussion Techniques for Active Learning.pdf
BULLET IMAGE Middendorf - Learning Student Names.pdf

A Link to their Associate Instructor handbook (of value as an example for others perhaps, but not of much overt value) http://www.aiprep.indiana.edu/

Indiana has also developed an effective pamphlet on plagiarism for students which may be found at http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets/plagiarism.shtml

IU`s entire Teaching Handbook, which offers short helpful entries covering the whole landscape of teaching tasks and responsibilities, may be found at http://www.teaching.iub.edu/handbook_toc.php

Highlights include especially good advice on working with groups such as the Group Skills Development Pledge http://www.indiana.edu/~teaching/ourservices/assess/groupskills.shtml which helps members of groups see specifically the skills needed in their participation.

Park University

Park University in Missouri offers a host of very practical materials, many of them with a checklist or immediate, hands-on instructional character.

For example, the Park site boasts a useful checklist for creating a course syllabus
            BULLET IMAGE http://www.park.edu/cetl/quicktips/syllabus.html

And for those new to the software, a very good video on creating a poster in PowerPoint
            BULLET IMAGE http://www.park.edu/cetl/quicktips/CreatingaPoster.html

The Park site is also good at linking to valuable material available elsewhere. It contains a good external link selection on Educational Taxonomy and Learning Objectives
            BULLET IMAGE http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/bloom.html
            BULLET IMAGE http://www.coun.uvic.ca/learning/exams/blooms-taxonomy.html

In addition, the site offers a written summary of a presentation by Ken Bain on What the Best College Teachers do as well as a link to a video of a teleconference Q&A conference session with Bain on the subject             BULLET IMAGE http://www.park.edu/cetl/quicktips/bain.html

University of Maryland University College

Among the recent excellent nominees of new material for the POD Network/National Teaching & Learning FORUM online library, the University of Maryland University College offers a wealth of material keyed to online learning.

Several good PDFs on online teaching and working with small groups.
BULLET IMAGE Best Practices for Online Teaching
BULLET IMAGE The Art of Feedback
BULLET IMAGE Assignments and Activities for Online Learning
BULLET IMAGE Working with Small Groups

All at http://www.umuc.edu/distance/odell/ctla/resources/tips.shtml

The site is also closely linked to the campus center for effective writing and a robust page on Effective Writing grounded very strongly in J. L Kinneavy`s,.. A theory of discourse: The aims of discourse.: (Prentice-Hall, Inc. 1971) http://www.umuc.edu/ewc/faculty/index.shtml

A subset of the Effective Writing Center`s offerings:
http://www.umuc.edu/ewc/index.shtml

includes templates for responding to students writing and samples in each of these discipline specific areas:
            BULLET IMAGE Accounting
            BULLET IMAGE Biology
            BULLET IMAGE Communications
            BULLET IMAGE EDCP100
            BULLET IMAGE History
            BULLET IMAGE Legal Studies
            BULLET IMAGE Literature
            BULLET IMAGE Sociology

Dusquene University

Dusquene University`s site comes quickly to the point(s). It`s pages inform faculty about important topics and provide links to further resources so that they may become not only informed, but educated as well if their interest carries them that far. For example under "Creating a Positive Learning Environment," at http://www.sites.duq.edu/cte/teaching/index.cfm simply finds links to three additional pages

            BULLET IMAGE Understanding Your Students
BULLET IMAGE Recognizing and Assisting Troubled Students
BULLET IMAGE Preventing and Curtailing Troublesome Student Behaviors

"Understanding Your Students" presents a quick, cogent overview of the Kolb and VARK learning models and a summary of the research by Wm Perry and Mary Belenky, et al on the stages and modes of student learning. The page begins with links to data on Dusquene students in particular, the kind of material collected in "engagement" surveys, as well as a link to the Beloit College annual Mindset List.

In the wake of the Virginia Tech campus massacre tragedy, the links to detailed material on recognizing and assisting troubled students and on preventing and curtailing troublesome student behavior are as welcome as they are, in many ways, sad.

Like other helpful teaching and learning center sites, Dusquene offers good material on

            BULLET IMAGE Syllabus & Course Design (Heavily influenced by Dee Fink`s 5 principles of good design;
               includes a syllabus checklist)

            BULLET IMAGE Teaching Strategies
            BULLET IMAGE Assessing Student Learning
            BULLET IMAGE Diversity / Multiculturalism
BULLET IMAGE Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
            BULLET IMAGE Writing to Learn
            BULLET IMAGE Classroom Discussions

Each campus has its own "take" on these topics and one can learn a good bit about current understand of these topics by comparing similar resources from different sites.

For example, Dusquene takes on the familiar topic of clarity in explanation via its on acronym - COIK (Clear Only If Known) which says a lot about prior knowledge and the move from novice to expert understanding.

http://www.sites.duq.edu/cte/teaching/instructional-clarity.cfm  COIK explained (Clear Only If Known)

Drexel University

For those who may not find topic/essay organization congenial, Barbara Hornum, the head of Drexel`s teaching and learning center offers a narrative introduction to teaching on campus http://www.drexel.edu/provost/dcae/teaching/Teaching%20Tips%20Guide.pdf, a Teaching Tips Guide for Drexel, but applicable elsewhere too.

The Drexels site (http://www.drexel.edu/provost/dcae/index.html) also boasts a PowerPoint presentation on Millennial Students

http://www.drexel.edu/provost/dcae/development/Millennials.html

by Dr. Miriam Diamond, of the Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching & Learning
Georgian College (Ontario, Canada)

Finally, for those who like to read while eating lunch, Georgian College has created an easily digestible publication on college teaching and learning calle "Pedagoggles"

http://www.georgianc.on.ca/staff/ctl/publications/pedagoggles

Pedagoggles appears eight times a year. Each issue contains the following sections:
BULLET IMAGE Reflection on Practice (questions to ask yourself about your teaching practice)
BULLET IMAGE Expanding Your Toolkit (more than 1 page of practical teaching ideas and strategies)

2003`s topics:
BULLET IMAGE Generating Active Participation in Lectures (Vol.1, No.1)
BULLET IMAGE Designing Formative Assessments (Vol.1, No.2)
BULLET IMAGE Facilitating Learning in Small Groups (Vol.1, No.3)
BULLET IMAGE Planning Instruction (Vol.1, No.4)
BULLET IMAGE Launching Your Course Effectively (Vol.1, No.5)
BULLET IMAGE Managing the Learning Environment (Vol.1, No.6)
